Kennedy Denby, the swimmer from Lanzarote who is triumphing in national competitions
In this post we meet Kennedy Denby, a swimmer born in Lanzarote who dreams of participating in the Olympics. For now, the athlete is the first Lanzarote woman to win medals in national competitions and in the last 3 years she has achieved the position as the most successful female swimmer in the Canary Islands, winning gold in her category in 5 different styles in the regional championships.
“After a lot of work and many sacrifices, i’ve reached the level of national competition”

She started swimming when she was five years old, and it didn’t take her long to stand out and win her first medals in open water competitions held on the island, becoming champion of the Insular Open Water Cup.
She tells us that she likes swimming in the pool but prefers the sea and open water competitions, “you have to take advantage of the great conditions we have on the island for swimming in the sea and also open water competitions give me a very good feeling”.
In events such as the Sailfish Lanzarote Open Water she has earned the top place on the podium on several occasions, and this year she hopes to repeat the experience.

“I compete in swimming pools and open water. I prefer open water because since I’m from Lanzarote, I have the chance to swim in the sea, the water isn’t so cold here and that makes me enjoy the sport even more”
She has just won the bronze medal in the 1,500m at the Spanish Junior Championships, the third medal she has won in a national competition, a milestone for Lanzarote swimming, which has never had a female swimmer on the podium at a national level. Kennedy says that part of her success is thanks to her teammates from the Nadamas Club with whom she shares many days of training and shared experiences.
The swimming pools of the Club Santa Rosa and the Hotel Barceló Active Resort are her main places of preparation, although she also goes out to sea from different points of the coast of the island during her open water training.
“My fellow athletes are fundamental in the sport, without them, I wouldn’t have got to where I am, because we all motivate each other”
