There are sports that you feel. And then there is triathlon. Triathlon is something you experience. From the first metre of the swim to the last stride of the run, this sport tests not only your body, but also your mind, your discipline and your ability to overcome adversity.
Triathlon has a special place in Lanzarote. Here, surrounded by volcanoes, the wind and the ocean, every triathlon becomes an epic adventure. The island not only offers unique conditions for competition – it also breathes the sport. The land supports it, honours it, and above all, celebrates it.
Because in Lanzarote, triathlon is more than just a competition: it is community, exhilaration and personal pride.
A journey in three acts
One of the most magical things about triathlon is that you don’t need to be a professional to feel like a triathlete. You can start with a supersprint, move on to a sprint, dare to try the Olympic distance, prepare for a half Ironman, and then one day… go for the full Ironman.
Each modality, each distance, is a different story. Some people start out dealing with their fear of the sea, others insecure on the bike or suffering on the run. But they all share one thing: the transformation that takes place in the process.
And in Lanzarote, all of that is enhanced. Because training here, competing here, means doing so surrounded by nature that pushes you, challenges you with its climate and inspires you.

An experience you will never forget
Triathlon in Lanzarote would not be what it is today without Kenneth Gasquet, a former triathlete based on the island who, enamoured with its wild beauty, brought the first Ironman here in 1992. Since then, several events make up the competition calendar for triathlon lovers.
In chronological order, we can highlight the Volcano Triathlon, with its classic approach and Olympic distance; the IRONMAN Lanzarote, which stands out as the most legendary event on the international circuit; and the Ocean Lava Lanzarote Triathlon, with its international family atmosphere, offering half Ironman, Olympic and sprint distances.

Lanzarote, a paradise of challenges for triathletes
So, against the backdrop of Lanzarote’s unique landscapes, its crystal-clear waters, cycling between volcanoes and running with sea views, the question comes down to: could there be a better setting for you to experience this wonderful challenge? The answer is no, and the thousands of people who come to the island every year to practise this sport are also clear about this.
The thrill of the exciting atmosphere at every point along the route is priceless. The applause and banners that support you along the way cheer you on, giving you that extra push when you start to falter. Discovering every corner of the island in this extraordinary way is a dream come true. And the shared atmosphere is responsible for giving everyone who travels to Lanzarote to practise this a feeling of goose bumps.

We’re talking about a feeling that will last all the way to the end of the race, culminating at the finish line. When you cross the promised finish line, the tension accumulated throughout the day surfaces in the form of joy at having achieved your goal, at the picture-postcard landscapes that accompanied you throughout, and at the affection shown by the public, so key in a long-distance race like this. It is, quite simply, unfathomable. You have to experience it to understand it.
A Unique Island, the perfect training location
Whether you have already registered for a triathlon in Lanzarote or not, the island is perfectly designed for preparing for your next race under the best conditions. Nothing more, nothing less! Here’s what awaits you:
-
For swimming, you have numerous beaches on the east coast at your disposal: Playa Grande and the other beaches in Puerto del Carmen, Playa del Reducto in Arrecife, Playa de las Cucharas and others in Costa Teguise, or Playa Dorada in Playa Blanca, among many others.
All offer little swell, few currents, and crystal-clear water with a temperature ranging between 18 and 22º all year round, perfect for swimming comfortably from January to December. A circular route or a crossing route, from one point on the coast to another, provide wonderful options for training and enjoying Lanzarote from another perspective.
And if you want to complement your training with pool sessions, our island also has several semi-Olympic and Olympic swimming pools, both outdoor and indoor: there are no excuses, you just have to choose between open water or the pool, put on your swimming cap and… get training!
-
For cycling, Lanzarote has excellent roads offering priority for cyclists. With less car traffic, these provide a safe environment for training. And it won’t just be the training sessions that leave you breathless. Wait until you see the views that await you! Timanfaya, La Geria, or the legendary climb to the Mirador del Río: these are ascents and descents with a cumulative elevation gain that may surprise you but, in the end, will leave you captivated by our island. Because Lanzarote is experienced differently on two wheels.
-
Running is just as easy. Fancy a bit of tarmac with sea views? Lanzarote has the longest sea-front promenade in the world, 21 km at your disposal from Puerto del Carmen to Costa Teguise! Feeling more like a trail today? Try one of the many trail routes among vineyards and volcanoes that the island has to offer, with endless options for distances and elevation gains! La Geria, El Bosquecillo and El Risco de Famara… these are just some of the places that will reward you with landscapes you won’t find anywhere else in Europe.

One island, thousands of stories
Training for a triathlon is an act of self-love. It requires commitment, effort and perseverance. But it also gives you moments of fulfilment when you complete that first transition without fear, when you go up that hill that once seemed impossible, when you spot the finish line and know that you have overcome your limits.
In Lanzarote, every stride, every push of the pedal and every stroke in the water tells a story of personal achievement. Yours. And that of all the people who, like you, dared to embark on this journey.
And when you cross that finish line, surrounded by applause, smiles, friends and family shouting your name… you will understand that Lanzarote is not just a place to compete. It is a place to get excited. To overcome your limits. And to remember, always, that you are capable of so much more than you thought.
