Antonio López Gutiérrez and María José González Fernández are crowned absolute champions in an event that combines sport, tourism and sustainability on the Costa Teguise Golf and Lanzarote Golf courses.
Lanzarote has once again stood out as a tourist and sporting destination with the celebration of the Grand Final of the XII Lanzarote Golf Tour AESGOLF – Trofeo Grand Teguise Playa. This prestigious senior amateur circuit, which covered various courses in Spain in its nine qualifying events, culminated this weekend on the spectacular courses of Costa Teguise Golf and Lanzarote Golf, bringing together the 17 finalists in an event that combined sport, tourism and sustainability.
The event took place over two exciting days under enviable weather conditions on the island, a heavenly refuge from the winter storm that affected a large part of the peninsula. Although the wind made Saturday’s round difficult, the players demonstrated their skill and ability to adapt, offering an unforgettable spectacle.
Antonio López Gutiérrez and María José González Fernández, both from Madrid, were crowned the overall winners of the tournament. Antonio, who obtained his place in the Grand Final after winning in Meaztegi (Vizcaya), expressed his amazement at the positive evolution of Lanzarote: “I was impressed by the change on the island, especially the level of restoration. The courses were in perfect condition and adapted well to my game.”
For her part, María José, who qualified after winning at Olivar de la Hinojosa, highlighted the difficulty and fun of the courses, as well as the added value of the organised tourist experiences: ‘It is a truly unique experience that I recommend to all my friends. I enjoyed both the golf and the excursions that allowed us to get to know this wonderful island better’.
The event was much more than a sporting competition. The closing ceremony, presided over by Adolfo de la Rúa, director of the Grand Teguise Playa Hotel, included the prize-giving ceremony and the closing of the XII Grand Teguise Playa Charity Tournament, the proceeds of which went to the Flora Acoge Association. This initiative supports a social inclusion programme for the most vulnerable groups on the island.
De la Rúa highlighted the role of the circuit as an ambassador for Lanzarote: ‘These events not only put Lanzarote on the tourist and sporting radar, but also generate direct benefits for our society’.
The AESGOLF Lanzarote Golf Tour has had the unconditional support of the Grand Teguise Playa Hotel for twelve years, cementing the alliance between sport, tourism and sustainability. Turismo Lanzarote has also been a key partner in promoting the island as an ideal destination for golf and leisure.
This circuit has brought together more than 800 players during its 2023 edition, standing out as a platform that not only boosts senior tourism, but also promotes values such as sustainability and solidarity.
The participants took advantage of their stay in Lanzarote to discover its main tourist attractions. From Jameos del Agua and the Timanfaya National Park to the Mirador del Río, the island was presented as an ideal destination to combine sport, gastronomy and nature.
The XII Lanzarote Golf Tour AESGOLF is, without a doubt, a perfect example of how sport can be a driving force for tourism and economic development, consolidating Lanzarote as an international benchmark.
