Last Saturday, the 33rd occasion of this event was held, in which Barney Reed and Dominique Lothaller were crowned champions in the 42 km distance
A marathon with temperatures of 22°C in the middle of the European winter can only be held in Lanzarote. On its 33rd occasion, the Font Vella Lanzarote International Marathon achieved a record number of participants, with more than 3,400 runners of up to 60 nationalities, with 1,000 registered for the 42 km distance. This event, which has established itself as a true celebration of athletics, not only celebrates sport, but also projects the excellent climatic conditions of the island and its capacity to organize major international events. This year, the big winners were the British Barney Reed (2:32:15) and the Swiss Dominique Lothaller (3:05:44), who were crowned champions in the 42 km event.
The main event, which took place in Teguise, Arrecife, San Bartolomé and Tías, started at 08:00. On the men’s podium, together with Reed, were the British Denis Prikulis (2:37:17) and the Spaniard Enrique Delgado (2:39:55). In the women’s category, the French Lenaïck Touzé (3:11:12) and the German Marlene Stallmann (3:13:28) completed the top spots. After crossing the finish line, Reed expressed his satisfaction at having achieved victory, highlighting that his preparation was key, especially after a bad experience in the London marathon, although he admits that in Lanzarote the heat affected him in the last kilometres. Lothaller, for her part, was excited to win her first marathon, an achievement that added to her career as a triathlete and trail competitions. She said that she enjoyed the race very much and hopes to repeat the experience next year.
The half marathon started at 10:30 a.m. from Puerto del Carmen. The first to reach the finish line in Costa Teguise were the Spaniard Beñat Bengoetxea (1:14:18), followed by the British Liviu Ionita (1:14:20) and Daniel Hawkins (1:14:31), starring in an exciting finale. In the women’s category, Germany’s Madlen Kappeler (1:24:02) took gold, followed by Spain’s Maddi Marquet (1:28:04) and Norway’s Aslaug Haugetuft (1:28:21).
The 10km runners set off from Arrecife. Barcelona’s Jaume Leiva (33:16) repeated as champion for the eighth time, while Adrián Hernández (34:06) and Chamo Díaz (34:19) took second and third place, respectively. In the women’s category, Extremadura’s Sonia Bejarano (38:36) took gold, followed by Audrey Bams (38:56) and Britain’s Christie Ford (43:44).
The 21km wheeler event, which also started in Los Charcos, provided another outstanding day of adapted sport, with Jordi Madera (1:01:17) and Martyna Snopek (1:25:24) taking victory in their respective categories. They were followed by the British Tiann Bosch (1:01:23) and Norberto Chávez (1:09:05), as well as the Spanish Carmen Giménez (1:32:32).
The day concluded with the trophy presentation, an event in which prominent personalities from the sports world awarded the winners of all categories. With this finishing touch, the Sands Beach Active team closed a memorable edition of the event, but already has its sights set on 6 December 2025, the date of the 34th edition of the Font Vella Lanzarote International Marathon.
